I was very poor growing up. Standard of living has improved, but by actions that I took on myself.
I used to be just like Jean Valjean.
    I lied. Deceived. Cheated.
Mainly observed what everyone else did.
Until I aged and common sense came to me that it is all wrongdoing. Everyone does wrong things at one point in their life or another.

I refuse to not speak out.
I believe people who have had things handed to them on a silver platter start with a lost sense of humanity. They don't truly understand hard work, labor, struggle, and most of all: survival.
They learn from interacting from people like myself to understand a life different than theirs and to accept it.

But almost 90% of the time, I am proved wrong on that.
    People don't understand me.
I was introduced and addicted to nicotene and THC at an extremely young age of 13.
I have broken my dependance on THC and am now re-living, and loving my sobriety. Currently have been on the track for 7 months to break my mental and physical dependancy on nicotene.
I have changed for the better because I understand if I didn't, my doom will result inevitably from it.

To boldly state that you've been a perfect person and have lead an honest life your whole life:
Shame on you for trying to convince yourself from what is reality. You are NOT perfect. You are NOT better. DON'T convince yourself that you haven't done any wrongdoing.
WE ALL HAVE. Just learn and grow from your mistakes. Accepting wrongdoing is the first step to leading a better life.

    5. Explain Javert's decision to commit suicide at the end of the film. (Extended question below)
I also agree with Nicole and Jessica that Javert is not all that bad and was only following orders. He might think that all criminals are bad regardless of their crimes. However, that's what you'll do if you were as committed to the law as Javert had been. Although, he might had done things that may seem injustice and unfair like hitting cossete's mother.

    6. Success of Les Mis (extended question below)
Les Mes has the universal message of "people can change" and that goes beyond language and culture. This message refers to humanity as a whole and since we're all human, we can all connect and somehow relate to Jean Valjean's struggles within his life. You can help but feel that this could be nonfiction literature because Jean's character is so real. He made mistakes, he went through trying times, he was put in situations that changed for the worse, but he was able to bounce back from all of that and become a truly complete human being. Being human is all about trial-&-error and the strive to become the best of yourself, and that's something everyone can understand.

Vanessa, I like the way you bring the symbolism of the candle sticks in to answer the question and reinforce your argument. I agree that Valjean did do the right thing and he did it even though he came from poor standings, but think of how he was able to do this. By a rare circumstance he came upon a dead man and took his papers, which in most cases things like that wouldn't happen.

    Define good.
    Define evil.
Then I might have an answer to this.
